At Gladwell Oyster Growers, we cultivate both Native (Ostrea Edulis) and Rock (Crassostrea Gigas) Oysters in the fertile creeks around West Mersea. We are continually pursuing new ideas and techniques of cultivation to produce top quality Oysters for which Colchester is renowned.
Colchester Native Oyster
Our Native Oysters are dredged from the river Blackwater in March and laid in the shallow creeks for fattening. By the 1st September they are a plump gourmet’s delight ready for the table.

Gigas ‘Rock’ Oyster
These Oysters are sold throughout the year and due to higher sea temperatures now spawn in the shallow creeks in July and August. With sustainable self sufficient stock in managed areas, these mature to a high quality Oyster.
